We’re celebrating 100 years of the Iowa Memorial Union with a tour through some memorable moments from IMU history.

Start your journey with a homage to the Silver Shadow speakeasy, just like Iowa students did in the 1930s secret room. Enjoy mocktails and classic appetizers — deviled eggs and smoked salmon and dill cream cheese tartlet with caviar while listening to the sounds of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, who performed at the IMU in 1949, while sipping on a mocktail.

To continue our tribute, you’ll enter the Main Lounge, a historic gathering place on campus for live bands, lectures, political speakers, Dance Marathon, and countless other events. Enjoy our Rock-n-Roll "Smashing Kashmir Curry" soup inspired by two of the greatest rock bands to play in that space — Led Zeppelin and the Smashing Pumpkins.

During the next course, we’ll honor some of the nation’s greatest voices who spoke at the IMU, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou, President John F. Kennedy, and Coretta Scott King. Voices of the American Dream is the inspiration for the home style entrée of apple cider braised pork shoulder, hoppin’ johns, corn bread dressing, and glazed baby rainbow carrots. Served with Parker House rolls.

Finally, step into the 1950s era of the IMU soda fountain and bowling alley with a root beer float or ice cream sundae.
