MISSE Student Engagement Assistant

Location: Afro-American Cultural Center
Rate of Pay: $13.25/hour

Run the day-to-day operations of the Cultural Centers/Areas: Afro-American Cultural Center, Latino Native American Cultural Center, Asian Pacific American Cultural Center, Pride Alliance Center, and International Student Support and Engagement. Lead and execute programming and events in collaboration with other Cultural Centers/Areas and Student Organizations. Assist in creating visual assets, marketing materials, and running the social media accounts for the Cultural Centers/Areas. Collaborate, foster, and maintain sustainable campus and community partnerships, and assist in daily maintenance, cleanliness & upkeep of Cultural Centers/Areas.

Responsibilities

• Oversee and run the cultural centers during their regular hours in Fall and/or Spring semesters, alongside your student team, Monday-Thursday from 12PM-9PM and Fridays from 12PM-5PM (hours subject to change).
• Be on time, clock-in and out appropriately, and maintain a consistent weekly working schedule for your selected and/or assigned Cultural Center/Area in Fall and/or Spring semesters.
• Ability to work in-person at all Cultural Centers/Areas as needed and fill open shifts/coverage as needed and able.
• Support the planning and execution of programming/events for your Cultural Center/Area with your student team and student lead, creating opportunities for collaboration with MISSE Supported Student Organizations and more student organizations on campus, as well as community and campus partners. (With the support of MISSE advisors)
• Assist in designing and/or creating marketing materials, visual assets and flyers for
• programs/events, updates and more, at each Cultural Center, and support in sharing via social media outlets such as Instagram, while following UI guidelines and MISSE/Branding guidelines and approval.
• Assist in the day-to-day operations of the cultural centers by taking phone messages, responding to e-mail and/or social media messages on behalf of the cultural centers appropriately and following UI and MISSE guidelines, and contacting campus partners and community agencies to collaborate and foster/maintain sustainable partnerships.
• Be visible and present for visitors upon entry and encourage visitors (student/staff/faculty, etc.) to utilize SWIPE technology for attendance purposes
• Create a warm and welcoming environment for visitors, offering tours for newcomers and sharing a summary of resources available at each Cultural Center to all in the UI Community who visit
• (kitchen, study rooms, living rooms, TVs, free printing, etc.)
• Be present, positive, and assist as needed, during assigned shifts at the Cultural Center(s), during any events and programs or meeting reservations occurring at the time of your shift.
• Support all the Cultural Centers/Areas programming and events such as celebration weeks and months, open houses, orientation/admission tours, and student-led affinity graduation celebrations.
• Assist in the physical maintenance of the Cultural Centers, this includes:
• Daily cleaning and upkeep of spaces – such as taking out the trash daily, wiping down surfaces, doing dishes, vacuuming, dusting, decluttering, and other regular and necessary cleaning and organizational related tasks. (Facilities Management visits each Cultural Center twice a week to clean the bathrooms, clean floors and regular surface level disinfecting).
• Support student organizations, campus and community partners in reserving the cultural centers via the most current reservation method.
• Reporting any damages to the Cultural Centers or their resources/tools to MISSE Professional Staff.
• Safely securing the building at the close of shift or center hours, as well as for university designated breaks and holidays.
• Work to create an atmosphere conducive to a positive environment, and mutual respect between self and your Student Engagement Assistant Peers and team as a whole,
• Attend weekly student staff meetings for your assigned center/area, monthly MISSE gatherings, and semesterly professional development trainings as scheduled by the MISSE Professional Staff.
• Maintain communication with your Student Engagement Assistant peers, Lead Student Engagement Assistant and with the MISSE Professional Staff as appropriate and read and respond to staff requests in a timely fashion (in-person, via UI email, and/or GroupMe).
• Perform other additional responsibilities and administrative tasks, as needed and assigned (open Cultural Centers outside of regular hours, running, storage/supply inventory, etc.)

Qualifications

• QUALIFICATIONS
• Must be a registered UI student
• Able to work 5-10 hours per week
• Ability to foster a welcoming and respectful environment while working with a variety of individuals and groups
• Good verbal, written, email, and other technology platform (e.g, GroupMe) communication skills
• Strong interest in event planning.
• Problem solving, and conflict resolution skills
• Technology and social media skills (Instagram, Canva, etc.)

• PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience in student leadership & event programming (e.g., event planning, community involvement)
• Eligible for work study
• Previous knowledge of university policies, procedures, etc.

Although your job in the Division of Student Life may not be directly related to your future profession, the skills you learn here will help you in your chosen career path and give you valuable work experience to strengthen your resume.
