Cultural Centers Student Engagement Assistant

Support running the day-to-day operations of the UI Cultural Centers: Afro-American Cultural Center, Latino Native American Cultural Center, Asian Pacific American Cultural Center, and Pride Alliance Center. Responsibilities include creating a welcoming space at each center, providing tours, supply management, inventory support, event support hosted in the spaces, and assistance in daily maintenance, cleanliness & upkeep of Cultural Centers. Through these duties, student employees help foster inclusive, well-maintained and vibrant community spaces for all in the UI community.
Responsibilities
• UI Cultural Center Representation, Operations & Maintenance
• Support daily operations of the UI Cultural Centers during regular hours in the Fall and Spring semester (Monday-Thursday 3-9PM; Friday 12-5PM; hours subject to change).
• Ensure shared spaces (lounges, multipurpose rooms, kitchens, meeting rooms, living rooms, etc.) are clean, organized and welcoming.
• Conduct routine checks to maintain a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment.
• Promptly report maintenance issues or safety concerns promptly to appropriate staff.
• Greet visitors, encourage use of SWIPE technology for attendance, and request shoe removal upon entry when appropriate.
• Provide tours of the UI Cultural Centers and share available resources (kitchen, study rooms, living rooms, TVs, free printing, etc.).
• Support monitoring and updating supply tracker, restocking items as needed and notifying supervisor when supplies run low.
• Keep storage areas organized and supplies clearly labeled and accessible.
• Assist with daily cleaning tasks, including trash removal, wiping surfaces, doing dishes, vacuuming, dusting, and decluttering
• Note: Facilities Management services bathrooms and floors twice weekly.
• Assist in monthly and semesterly cleaning and organization tasks (team cleaning sessions, large post-event organization or cleanup, etc.).
• Assist with basic administrative tasks such as data entry, flyer distribution, and updating the events bulletin board.
• Report any damage to the UI Cultural Centers or equipment to Leadership & Engagement Professional Staff.
• Safely securing the building at the end of your shift and during UI breaks/holidays.
• Event & Reservation Support
• Assist with setup, breakdown and cleanup for events and reservations during your assigned shift (e.g. arranging furniture, setting up AV equipment, preparing materials, etc.).
• Be present and actively support events or meetings held in the UI Cultural Centers during your shift.
• Provide after-hours support for external reservations and events as scheduled.
• Greet guests, answer questions, and troubleshoot minor issues during events to ensure a positive experience.
• Collaborate with staff and peers to ensure events run smoothly and inclusively.
• Promote and share the UI Cultural Center’s Reservation form with all patrons and UI students interested in reserving the space.

• Team Collaboration & General duties
• Arrive on time, clock in/out accurately at the treering stations, and maintain a consistent weekly schedule at your assigned UI Cultural Center during the Fall and/or Spring semesters.
• Be flexible and available to work in-person at any of the UI cultural Centers as needed, including filling open shifts.
• Foster a positive, respectful, and collaborative environment with your fellow Student Engagement Assistants.
• Attend all required meetings and training, including weekly center staff meetings, monthly UI Cultural Centers Team gatherings and semesterly professional development sessions (e.g. staff trainings/retreats).
• Participate in regular one-on-one meetings with your primary supervisor (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly).
• Communicate effectively with your peers, supervisors, and Leadership & Engagement pro-staff, and respond to messages and requests in a timely manner (in person, via UI email and/or Microsoft Teams).
• Perform additional responsibilities and administrative tasks as assigned by Leadership & Engagement pro-staff.
Qualifications
• QUALIFICATIONS
• Must be a registered UI student
• Able to work 5-10 hours per week
• Comfortable with and able to work with different groups of students and populations from the UI community.
• Good verbal, written, email, and other technology platform (e.g, Teams) communication skills.
• Strong interest in event and operations support.
• Problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

• PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience in event support and event management.
